Start with the nonresident military path
For a Davis-Monthan AFB PCS, the most common vehicle question is whether an active-duty service member has to switch to Arizona plates or an Arizona driver license. If the service member is stationed in Arizona but keeps legal residence in another state, SCRA-related guidance generally allows valid home-state registration and a valid home-state driver license to remain in place.
That does not remove every vehicle task. You still need valid registration, insurance, and a driver license to operate on Arizona roads and access Davis-Monthan AFB. If the registration, insurance, or license will expire during the assignment, solve the home-state renewal problem before travel gets tight.
This site does not provide legal advice. Use ADOT MVD, ADEQ, MilitaryINSTALLATIONS, and the Davis-Monthan AFB legal office to verify the current rule for your exact title, residency, insurance, and spouse facts.
- Keep home-state registration, proof of insurance, driver license, military ID, and orders accessible during travel.
- Check whether your home state allows online or mail renewal while you are stationed in Arizona.
- Confirm whether your insurance carrier needs the Tucson garaging address even if the plates stay out of state.
